Shaka Zulu

African cuisine at its finest…. That’s what this Camden London restaurant presents. With the interior as cultured as the food and decked out for luxury dining, Shaka Zulu is in no surprise a popular dining option. Items on the menu such as Kingklip and Ostrich fillet make the menu unique and spectacular. Me and my boyfriend were treated to this meal as a family Christmas gift and thought it was about time we used it and had an evening of sheer luxury….

To Start

We had a 3 course set menu and this featured delicious cocktails – I would definitely recommend these if you love a fruity and refreshing beverage!

On the menu for starter…

Lamb Samosas, Peach Chutney

Cape Malay King Prawns & Curry Mayonnaise

I don’t normally eat much meat but the lamb samosas were melt in the mouth and the chutney was the perfect accompaniment. I had never had African food before but the flavours were subtle yet amazing.

Main Event

We enjoyed sharing our main courses and tried two things we had never eaten before.

On the menu for main course…

Cajun Spiced Kingklip, Wilted Kale & Chilli, Lemon Oil

8 oz Ostrich Fillet, Red Wine Jus

Ratatouille

Kingklip is a delicate fish and it tasted wonderful with the Cajun spicing. The ostrich fillet was so lean and I think I would describe it as a cross between the taste and texture of duck and venison. Both dishes were incredible. We happily ordered some wine and the side dish of ratatouille to embellish our meal even further.

Dessert

On the menu for dessert…

Dark Chocolate Tart, Honeycomb Crackling

Melktert, Cinnamon Chantilly

Although a little disappointed by the uniqueness of desserts on the menu, they were delicious. I had never tried melktert before and it is basically a very nice custard tart. The chocolate tart was a winner for me though as it was so much lighter than the normal ones you order in restaurants.

The Atmosphere

Overall, the charming African atmospheric scene and the glorious food made a perfect setting for a classy date night and treat evening. I would recommend going to this restaurant if you are like me and love to try different cuisines. I really enjoyed receiving this gift from my family and it was a lovely idea.

Have you been to Shaka Zulu before? Will you be visiting it in London? Can you recommend more African cuisine restaurants to visit?
